How can I travel to Koh Tao?

There are many choices of travel options from Bangkok to Koh Tao.
Choices include flight, taxi, train or bus but ultimately it will involve a ferry boat for your last leg of the journey.
And there are multiple ferry companies operating at services that run twice a day later we the night boat.
Prices vary from 1100THB up to 50000THB.
Bus & boat Bangkok to Koh Tao
The cheapest option or for the more adventurous traveller or those on a strict budget you can get the public bus from Bangkok Southern bus terminal to Chumphon for about 250thb, once in Chumphon ask to be dropped at Fame bar or close to it is the train station. From there you can easily organise the last leg of your journey, day ferries depart 07:30 and 13:00 but you need to be there well before hand as their is a 20 min journey to the pier. Or the night boat service will depart about 10pm depending on tide.
Alternatively it is easier with language and location to book your travel tickets at Khao San Road in Bangkok or made directly with the company.

Train and Boat – Bangkok to Koh Tao
The State Railway of Thailand has daily departures to Chumphon and combined train and bus options can
be purchased. The best train to take is the 2nd class sleeper trains which travel through the night. The express train leaves at 19:15 from Bangkok and arrives in Chumphon around 5:00 am. Once is the Chumphon the boat leaves around 7:30 in the morning arriving at 09:30 on Koh Tao.The prices depend on class and it is no longer possible to book online directly but try here or you may need an agent to make the booking or make your own way to the Hua Lamphong train station to purchase the
Bangkok to Koh Tao flight via Koh Samui
I recommend flying to the island of Koh Samui and then taking a boat from there. Tickets can be purchased on-line from Bangkok Airways www.bangkokair.com
There are daily departures from 6:00 to 19:40. If you would like to arrive on Koh Tao the same day that you leave Bangkok then make sure you take the flight that leaves at 10:10 or any earlier flights. There are 2 boats to Koh Tao daily one at 8:00 am and then the last ferry at 12 noon. Once at the Samui airport tickets can be purchased for the Lomprayah Catamaran or the Seatrans Company, both boats are roughly a 2 hour journey. Tickets for both companies are 600 baht and they provide pick-up from the airport to the pier.

Once in Surat Thani you can either make the night boat departing at 22:00 arriving at 05:00 or the morning Lomprayah ferry that leaves 07:00 getting you to Koh Tao for about 15:00, or the 15:00 Boat arriving at Koh Tao 19:00
Koh Tao from Krabi, Phuket, Koh Phi Phi
If coming from the south directly to Koh Tao then make your way to Surat Thani. From there a night boat leaves daily at 23:00 and arrives at 5:00 the following morning. Tickets are 600 baht. The new ferry has bunk berths and air conditioned cabin for over 100 passengers, and is much more comfortable than the old wooden banana shaped deck that was previously used. Another option would be to fly from Phuket to Koh Samui and then take the boat here or fly to Surat Thani then take the boat from Don Sak to Koh Tao by Seatrans Ferry.
